‘Kane is not essentially the most well-known participant in Gelsenkirchen – it is an ex-Saints star’
More chaos from the nation which prides itself on efficiency.
Having unleashed a failing rail network on all those who have travelled to Euro 2024, the Germans have now decided to make life just as difficult for the media when it comes to getting into matches. Members of the media had to wait for up to an hour before reaching the security checks.
The situation wasn’t helped by the fact photographers were in the same line, unlike previous tournaments, and had to have all their equipment checked.

Not that the long wait bothered a couple of English journalists, who produced the age old trick of spotting a familiar face in the queue, going to say hello, then deciding to stay there.
In other words, they pushed in. You know who you are.

If Jordan Pickford needed any more motivation ahead of last night’s opening game against Serbia, he got some from a German source, of all places!
Former Germany international Didi Hamann took to television in his role as a pundit to claim England would never win a major tournament with the Everton star in goal.
Pickford might have felt like pinning Hamann’s comments above his locker at the Arena AufSchalke. But then again, what seems to be the point?
Hamann is clearly intent on becoming one of the most controversial pundits of the tournament, but at this rate is more likely to end it as one of the most foolish ones instead.
UEFA made a point in the build up to Euro 2024 of claiming it would be one of the most sustainable ever stages.
But the FA and England obviously didn’t get the memo.
Because for their journey from Erfurt to Gelsenkirchen for their opening Group C clash with Serbia, Gareth Southgate and his squad chose to fly instead of getting on a train. A flight between the two cities takes 105 minutes.
In fairness to the FA, the England squad is expected to take the train to Frankfurt for the second game, against Denmark on Thursday.
Harry Kane might be one of the most popular imports in Germany these days, following his brilliant first season at Bayern Munich.
But the England captain wasn’t even the most popular player in the city of Gelsenkirchen ahead of his side’s game with Serbia. Kane had to step aside and let Serbian rival Dusan Tadic take this accolade.
The former Southampton star plays for Fenerbahce, and due to there being a huge Turkish community in Gelsenkirchen, they all came out to mob Tadic when he left his team hotel to head to the game.
There was no chance of Adam Wharton’s brother missing England’s opening game of Euro 2024.
And he was even prepared to ignore medical advice to do so. Scott Wharton, who is also a professional footballer and plays with Blackburn, has been recovering from a knee operation.
Doctors told him he couldn’t fly, and because the surgery had only been six weeks ago, Scott decided to get his partner to drive him to Germany instead.
