‘Everyone in Liverpool likes combating – boxing modified me as a soccer participant’

Anthony Gordon admits a combination of boxing and chess have helped turn him into an England star.

Newcastle ace Gordon is part of the Three Lions squad hoping to win Euro 2024 this summer.

And Gordon has revealed the strange combination which has helped him reach the highest level for both club and country.

Gordon is also reading All Black legend Dan Carter’s book ‘The Art of Winning: Ten Lessons in Leadership, Purpose and Potential’, during his downtime at the tournament.

The winger said: “I got into it (boxing) in Liverpool. Everyone in Liverpool likes fighting.

“It just makes me more aggressive and play with more tenacity. It doesn’t work for everyone, but that works for me.

“Before I started boxing, I went down a lot and got pushed off the ball. It helped with my aggression and desire to win.”

Gordon is also a big chess fan and he added: “It’s a life skill, because it applies to everything.

“I self taught myself. I didn’t have a clue how to play it. It’s very peaceful. I like the deep thought process, because I love to learn and like that challenge.”
