Last Snapchat of Jay Slater earlier than name saying he was ‘in the course of nowhere’

A heartbreaking Snapchat video shows missing teen Jay Slater enjoying life the night before he vanished – after calling his friend to tell he was lost in the wilds of Tenerife.

The 19-year-old had gone to the Canary Islands with friends for the New Rave Generation music festival last week.

On Sunday, June 16, the apprentice bricklayer from Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire, left the festival with “two English lads he met at a party” to go back to their accomodation for a “few beers”, driving to the apartment in a hire car.

The following morning, after not being able to catch a bus, Jay set out to return to his accomodation on foot — an 11 hour journey.

Around 8.15am, the lad called his friend Lucy, and sounded disorientated, as he told her he was in need of water and had just 1% battery on his phone.

As the extensive search continues for the missing Brit, a Snapchat video made with friends reveals some of his last shared moments with friends, before he vanished.

In the video, Jay is laughing and smiling with a female friend during Sunday festivities, at one point giving the camera a thumbs up. The lad wears a grey t-shirt with a green panel on either shoulder.

Jay’s last known whereabouts was in Reno Rural Park, a popular spot for mountain hikers and a 10-hour walk away from where he was staying.

Helicopters have been scouring Tenerife’s countryside, as search and rescue crews search on foot for the missing teenager, along side Jay’s family and friends, search dogs and island residents.

Pal Lucy said: “He’s ended up out in the middle of nowhere. Jay was obviously thinking he would be able to get home from there.

“But then in the morning he’s set off walking, using his maps on his phone and ended up in the middle of mountains with nothing around.”

Jay’s mum, who arrived on the island on Tuesday said: “I’m obviously beside myself with worry.

“He’d been at a three-day festival so he would have consumed a fair bit of alcohol but Jay was snapchatting with friends before he went missing and seemed very compos mentis.”

She added that her fear is that he has become disorientated and hadn’t realised it was a 10-hour walk home.
