Shaqiri wondergoal rocks Scotland as Switzerland’s ex-Liverpool ace units report

Former Liverpool star Xherdan Shaqiri scored a wondergoal for Switzerland against Scotland – setting an incredible record in the process.

The midfielder, who won the Champions League and Premier League with the Reds, was recalled to the Switzerland side for the crunch Group B clash with Scotland in Cologne. His nation had already got off to a strong start at the Euros with a 3-1 win over Hungary, while the Scots were desperate for a win after a 5-1 hammering at the hands of hosts Germany.

It was Scotland who opened the scoring, with Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay’s effort deflected into the net after an incisive run from captain Andrew Robertson.

But the lead didn’t last long as poor play at the back from Steve Clarke’s side saw a slack pass gift the ball to Shaqiri on the edge of the box, who unleashed a swirling shot into the top corner of the net without even taking a touch.

The beautiful curling left-footed shot was all the more impressive as it means the veteran midfielder is the only player to score at all of the last three European Championships and the last three World Cups.

The 32-year-old winger, who won three Bundesliga titles in three seasons at Bayern Munich before moving to Inter Milan, first came to the Premier League with Stoke City, where he became a cult hero with his eye for goal. But after the Potters were relegated in 2018, he made a shock move to Anfield for £13.5m.

In his first season playing for Jurgen Klopp he won the Champions League, playing a key role in the famous 4-3 semi-final comeback win over Barcelona on the way, and went on to lift the Super Cup and Club World Cup along with the Premier League during his time on Merseyside. Having left Liverpool for Lyon, he now plays for Major League Soccer side Chicago Fire.

Shaqiri has earned more than 120 caps and scored 32 goals for Switzerland, making him the country’s second-most capped player and fourth-highest goalscorer, having represented the nation at four World Cups and three European Championships.
