Terrifying second big shark is noticed swimming into British harbour

An angler experienced a terrifying moment when he spotted a huge 10ft shark swimming into a British harbour.

Veteran fisherman Jimmy Price couldn’t believe his eyes when he saw the dorsal fin protruding above the water in Anglesey, Wales.

The 59-year-old dropped his rod and picked up his phone to film the whopping sea creature as it lurked around the bay of the nearby Holyhead Breakwater lighthouse.

Jimmy can be heard saying: ‘Big fish that,’ as he recognised it as a harmless Basking Shark which can grow up to 28ft long.

The shark eventually left the port and swam back out into the open ocean, with the whole ordeal leaving Jimmy in a state of shock.

The double-glazing fitter said: ‘I was walking along the breakwater around 8am when I saw something out of the corner of my eye.

‘I’d not seen a basking shark before but I’ve caught other sharks so I knew what it was.

‘I was pretty shocked – I didn’t expect to see a shark cruising around the harbour at that time of the day!’

Jimmy, of Abergele, North Wales, is a veteran sea angler and was at the site for a fishing competition that day.

He said: ‘I dropped my rod and started chasing it down the breakwater with my mobile phone.

What are basking sharks?

Basking sharks are the second-largest fish in the world after whale sharks.

The maximum size of the sharks is around 39ft but there have been unconfirmed reports of larger ones.

Basking sharks feed mainly on zooplankton and are relatively harmless to humans.

They will swim slowly just beneath the surface with their mouths open to filter the tiny organisms from seawater.

They prefer to live in cooler waters, along coastlines and in open water, and can be found across the world.

‘I wanted proof. I see lots of curiosities when out fishing – like sea otters running across the beach at Llanddulas – and I like to share them online. People are interested and it can be educational.’

Anglesey Sea Zoo said they were ‘excited’ at the sighting, adding: ‘We do get reports of these close to shore but this is the first official sighting this season!’

Jimmy posted the video online and stunned viewers with his shark footage.

Some claimed it was a hoax, while some fellow anglers joked he was ‘gonna need a bigger float’, referencing the classic Jaws line.

One local swimmer said: ‘Wouldn’t stop me s****ing my budgie smugglers if that fin popped up in front of me. Lots of them around the Breakwater and the coast here.’

Another woman said: ‘Waters are getting scary,’ while another local added: ‘Christ, I was out swimming deep water in the inner harbour this morning.’
