Alan Brazil agrees Euro 2024 England and Scotland forfeit – with Chesney Hawkes

Alan Brazil has found himself in a surprise wager with pop icon Chesney Hawkes over England and Scotland’s fortunes at Euro 2024.

The ex-Scotland ace wasn’t impressed with Hawkes’ latest song, a rehashed ‘Hey Jude’ for England’s Jude Bellingham, including the line: “Nearly 60 years of pain, hey Jude, we place a nation’s hope upon your shoulders.” Brazil didn’t mince his words, branding the tune “murder”.

However, word got back to ‘The One and Only’ singer and he laid down a challenge for Brazil. If Southgate’s side win the Euros, Brazil could be in for a shocker, though Steve Clarke’s Scotland could also help out the radio host.

On Thursday, Brazil ate humble pie and told listeners that Hawkes had been in touch with talkSPORT, laying down the gauntlet with a potential dare. “Good morning Alan. Firstly I’m sure after last night the last thing you want is sympathy from Chesney Hawkes – but here I am giving it,” Hawkes said.

“So, I was listening yesterday when you described my fun little social media post of Hey Jude as ‘murder’ and you also said you could do it better. Well, that sounds like a throwdown of a challenge to me so I’m looking forward to you showing us you can come up with a stronger, better version of the song and sing it as well. Because I’ve heard you sing mate and it is beautiful.”

Setting out the terms, he declared: “So how about if England win the Euros, you come up with your own lyrics and sing it on air, and in return, if Scotland manage to scramble a third-place qualification out of the group, you can throw me down a forfeit. Put your money where your mouth is Alan, come on – if you’ve got any left after Royal Ascot this week.”

England won their first game and could potentially book their place in the round of 16 against Denmark (Thursday, 5pm) but there is still a long way to go in the tournament On the other hand, Scotland kept their Euro 2024 journey alive by securing a draw with Switzerland on Wednesday, teeing up a decisive match against Hungary (Sunday, 8pm).

Responding to Hawkes laying down a gauntlet, Brazil replied: “The money’s down Chesney, don’t you worry about that pal. You’re on, you’re on. It was a bit of fun, it was just a bit of Chesney round the piano wasn’t it?

“Having a bit of fun, changing it. I’m only kidding Chesney. Nah, he’s a good guy, loves his football – a big listener. The moose (talkSPORT’s Ian Abrahams) pesters him all the time, poor guy. Chesney, we have a bet.”
