Wales supervisor Rob Page getting boot after Euro 2024 failure and World Cup distress

Wales boss Rob Page is set to step down after three and a half years in charge.

Page, 49, failed to lead Wales to Euro 2024 this summer – and their misery has only spiraled with poor results against Gibraltar and Slovakia. Wales’ 0-0 draw with Gibraltar proving to be the one of the final straws for his tenure.

Football Association of Wales (FAW) bosses have held talks for the past week before coming to their decision. Page was handed the job in November 2020, initially taking over from Ryan Giggs on a temporary basis before getting the job permanently.

Page took Wales to the knockout stages of Euro 2020, before being thrashed 4-0 by eventual semi-finalists Denmark. Wales also qualified for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar – beating Ukraine in a playoff.

However, they were dumped out in the group stages, finishing on one point after defeats at the hands of Iran and England. And their misery would only start to pile after missing out on Euro 2024.

Wales endured a tough June international break when a youthful Welsh side drew with the minnows of Gibraltar before a stronger line-up were battered 4-0 in Slovakia.

“They [Wales’ fans] want me out. I completely understand. I’ve got to stay true to myself and focused on the job in hand. Everything else is out of my control,” Page admitted after losing to Slovakia.

There were heavy boos from the stands, aimed in the direction of Page, during both clashes.

Wales next game comes in the Nations League against Turkey on September 6 before they make a trip to Montenegro three days later.

World Cup qualifying is next on the agenda, which begins in Spring 2025.
