Fawlty Towers city now ‘tiny TV capital of UK’ as locals ‘hate’ massive ones

Folk in the seaside town of Torquay – the setting of hit 70s sitcom Fawlty Towers – buy more tiny tellies than anywhere else in Britain.

Researchers at electrical giant Currys scoured its sales data over the past year to find where in the UK certain items were most popular.

It found that folk in Torquay in Devon – birthplace of crime writer Agatha Christie, funnyman Peter Cook, joker Miranda Hart and model Lily Cole – snapped up more ‘small’ TVs than anywhere else.

Small TVs are considered those sized 24” to 32”, although you can get ones with screens as titchy as 14”.

The average telly size owned by most Brits these days is between 43”-65”, with large TVs ranging from 75” to 98”.

The study found that Torquay was top of the league for folk snapping up small tellies, with 10% of all TVs sold being ‘small’ in the past year.

By contrast, the fans of the biggest TVs were from Sunderland, with one-in-10 buying a massive telly of 75” or bigger.

Samantha Peters, 55, of Torquay, said she hated ‘giant tellies’, adding: ‘Big TVs take over the room and impose themselves on you.

“I prefer smaller TVs, although I must admit I sometimes have to pull my chair closer to see it properly.”

A spokesman for Currys said that its sales data showed that folk from Torquay were the ‘largest purchasers of small TVs’.
