Lando Norris and McLaren workers evacuated as a result of hearth

  • Lando Norris and his McLaren team were today evacuated from their motorhome
  • The area of the paddock was cleared as fire engines and ambulances came in
  • The fire broke out before noon, 30 mins before third practice was due to start

Lando Norris and his McLaren team were dramatically evacuated from their motorhome at the Spanish Prix when a fire broke out.

Smoke was detected by those in the building – including journalists at a media brunch – before they were ordered to leave.

The Team Hub paddock hospitality unit was cleared as a result, with fire engines and ambulances coming in to deal with the situation.

Norris and team-mate Oscar Piastri made their way to the garages 100 yards from the fire to take part in the practice session.

The fire broke out just before noon, half an hour before the third practice was due to start at the Circuit de Catalunya.

The fire is said to have started in the kitchens – with Norris’ race suits reportedly trapped in the different part of the building.

Earlier marshals had gone into the three-storey building with fire extinguishers – some were wheeled out or carried out in ambulances, having gone into the building without breathing apparatus.

Team principal Zak Brown watched on from as close to the scene as the security cordon allowed and smoke filled the hot air.

McLaren released a statement which read: ‘This morning we evacuated our Team Hub paddock hospitality unit following a fire alert, the team has been safely evacuated while the local fire brigade handle the issue.’
