Anthony Joshua does not need son boxing and he ought to turn into accountant

Former world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua wants his son to become an accountant rather than follow him into the ring.

Since making his debut as a professional boxer in October 2013, 6ft 6in Joshua is thought to have made more than £200million with his fists.

However, he told Desert Island Discs host Lauren Laverne he wants eight-year-old Joseph – known as JJ – to go into the world of books and numbers.

He said: “I don’t think it’s a wise decision to follow in my footsteps.

“If I was to choose for him, I’d ask him to look at accountancy because I think it’s good to understand numbers.

“When you have that kind of insight you can become an entrepreneur and invest in business. I want him to focus on business.”

JJ was born in 2015 from Joshua’s relationship with dance teacher Nicole Osbourne.

He has previously said he wants the young man to avoid the gloves.

“It’s too hard. It’s a dangerous sport. I want my son to be the best man he can be, but I don’t want him compared to me,” he Joshua told men’s magazine, GQ.

“You’re not going to be a boxing star without going through heaps of pain.

“People see the glamour, the winning.

“No one’s interested in the knocks and bruises.”

Joshua, 35, is well aware of the pitfalls for a young aspiring boxer, which is why he wants JJ to avoid it.

He told Laverne: “He is cool. He gets it. I have always kept boxing out… He knows I’m just Dad.”

Joshua said he really values family, more so after a five-day “darkness retreat”, and added: “It just brought home what is important.”

He has stated that he is considering throwing in the towel in a few years and has plans to create a care home for ailing former boxers.
