Birmingham City asking if they will play Wrexham match within the USA subsequent season

Birmingham have asked if they can play their League One clash with Wrexham stateside next season.

Wrexham have a big following across the Atlantic thanks to their Hollywood owners – Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. And their subsequent documentary, Welcome to Wrexham, has seen more US sports fans tune into the beautiful game.

Birmingham, on the other hand, also have US backers, most notably in the form of Tom Brady. Brady, 46, is almost royalty in New England – having led the Patriots through their glory years.

According to the Daily Mail, Birmingham are now sounding out if the two can play their EFL clash in the US next season.

Wrexham will already be making the trip across the pond this summer as they return to the US for a pre-season tour. Wrexham will begin in the US against Bournemouth on July 20 before they face Chelsea four days later.

The Welsh club will then travel to Canada for the final game of the tour, in Reynolds’ home city of Vancouver, against the Major League Soccer side Vancouver Whitecaps.

“Last year’s US tour was a fantastic experience and a memorable trip for all the players and staff,” Phil Parkinson admitted.

“After another successful campaign, we’re delighted to be heading to the West Coast again this summer, and we’re also looking forward to venturing up to Vancouver and spreading the club’s footprint into Canada.”

In May, FIFA handed a major boost to the USA’s chances of hosting football matches on American soil. FIFA withdrew from a court case between US soccer chiefs and promotors Relevent Sports over the former’s attempts to block La Liga matches being played in the country.

FIFA’s ruling council confirmed the establishment of a new working group that could offer their backing to “out of territory” games being staged, via The Sun. That could potentially open up the possibility of league games being held in the US.
