Dead boxer will get 4 12 months ban for cocaine – three months after passing away

UK Anti-Doping yesterday banned a fighter for four years – three months after he died.

The drug testing organisation had to issue a second statement hours later after they confirmed a National Anti-Doping Panel decision to hand Mexican boxer Moises Calleros a four-year ban. Calleros tested positive for cocaine following his April 2023 defeat by Galal Yafai at the O2 in London.

UKAD spent over 12 months pursuing the case against the Mexican and issued a ban yesterday from all WADA-approved sport. But they were unaware that the boxer had passed away in March of this year.

A statement said: “UK Anti-Doping (UKAD) has today received information regarding the death of Mexican professional boxer Moises Calleros. UKAD received this information shortly after publishing details of the outcome from a case concerning Mr Calleros in accordance with the UK Anti-Doping Rules.

“Unfortunately, UKAD had no information regarding Mr Calleros’ sad passing at the time of publication and has now removed all details of this case from its channels.”

Two British boxers are expected to be provisionally suspended by the British Boxing Board of Control in the coming days after their bout was cancelled at the weekend because of suspected betting irregularities.
