Fashion skilled’s recommendation on not wanting like a ‘hooligan’ in an England shirt

England fans are raring to go this evening for the last of their group matches – but they should be careful with what they’re wearing.

What do we mean by that? Well, while the actual police will be on the look out for hooligans wanting to cause trouble – the fashion police will also be making their rounds.

And with a scorcher of a week weather-wise, the whole face paint and beer belly on show combo might not be doing anyone any favours.

Surely the only thing you need with a footy shirt is a cold pint, right? Well, wrong.

If you want to avoid looking like a bit of ‘hooligan’ tonight as England face Slovenia, then maybe have a read of our chat with Natalie Chapman, Senior Fashion Designer at menswear clothing company, Raging Bull.

You can actually look quite fashionable instead of like a ‘hooligan’ in a footy shirt…

The expert exclusively told us: “We wear football shirts for a reason – they make a statement. The typical supporter’s uniform is a football shirt, jeans, trainers and a puffer jacket but there are ways to switch this up for a more stylish look.

“The first step is to consider the colour combination of your team’s shirt. Often, team shirts are very bold and bright so picking an outfit to match is key.

“Consider teaming the shirt with an over-shirt in a smart but slightly oversized fit with a straight-cut hem and pair this with chinos and smart, clean kicks to elevate the look.

“Alternatively, choose a plain cotton or linen shirt with a few buttons undone and then add a casual blazer to complete the look. This style works well with dark navy or black jeans and either trainers or smart shoes, depending on the occasion.”

Not sure if this would get the seal of approval

Now again, it’s often all the rage to have the brand-new footy shirt. But if you’re opting for a non-hooligan and bang-on trend style, then perhaps you need to have a raid through your dad’s wardrobe – or the charity shop.

Many people associate football shirt wearing blokes with boozy behaviour, but a few small tweaks can change the whole look – and win you style points down the pub.

The style guru added: “Football shirts are undeniably partisan, but one of the most stylish ways to show support is to go retro.

“Vintage or past-season shirts give off a very different vibe. Think long sleeves with collars, block colours and a simple emblem on the chest.”

Lastly, a lot of the ‘vibe’ you give off as a football shirt-wearing fan is how you prefer to wear your shirt – tight or baggy.

While accentuating your beer belly or your boobs may seem favourable to some, in the fashion world it’s much more cooler to wear a loose fitting footy shirt apparently.

Patriotic and full of style!

Natalie said: “Official club tops are likely to be a very snug fit as they are designed for comfort whilst on the pitch.

“However, many people who are looking to wear their team’s shirt on a more casual outing will likely be much more comfortable in a baggier fit.

“This style is easier to style with your casual clothes too.”

So who knows, your footy shirt might just help you on the pull!
