Prison officer smuggled contraband into jail utilizing Kinder Surprise egg in vagina

A prison officer smuggled contraband into a jail for her inmate boyfriend inside a Kinder Surprise egg hidden in her vagina.

Kate Southern, 26, is said to have smuggled the item – which usually contains a small surprise toy – into HMP Altcourse during a month-long fling with the lag. She admitted misconduct in a public office and was handed a 16-month prison sentence suspended for two years.

Liverpool Crown Court heard she first began working at Altcourse in August 2019 and by December 2021 was reported to be in a relationship with the prisoner, referred to only as ‘M’. The prisoner’s disgruntled girlfriend tipped off authorities that the two were having an affair in January 2022.

The unusual smuggling technique was discovered after investigators looked into the inmate’s phone calls – which were recorded – and heard them discussing it. Christopher Stables, prosecuting, said a series of calls on January 5 revealed Southern had “conveyed an unknown item contained within a plastic Kinder egg, wrapped in cling film and secreted within her vagina”.

The plastic pot, which is found inside a chocolate Kinder Surprise egg, is less than 6cm tall and opens to reveal a small child’s toy. As well as smuggling contraband into the prison, Southern also engaged in sex acts with the inmate in his cell and sent him gushing Moonpig cards.

Two nearly identical Moonpig birthday cards, signed from “your baby face KK”, were seized when his cell was searched on January 19. The prosecutor said Southern was also seen on CCTV footage entering and leaving his cell – which later correlated with comments they made on phone calls talking about their sexual activity. Even after M was transferred to HMP Buckley Hall in Rochdale, the pair continued to have phone sex.

Philip Tully, defending, told the court: “It is clear that there was an element of manipulation by the serving prisoner and that he exploited her inexperience and naivety to get her to engage in the conduct she did.

Mr Tully said Southern was “flattered” as the prisoner made her think he was a “man of means” who wanted to be with her when he left prison.

Sentencing, Judge David Potter said: “This was a significant breach of trust that the public reposes in prison officers and was a complete embarrassment, both personally to you and the prison service at large.”

Southern, of Whiston, Merseyside, was also ordered to carry out 125 hours of unpaid work and a rehabilitation activity requirement of up to 15 days.
