Ex-cop shares grim Jay Slater principle and claims ‘it may take days to seek out him’
A grim new theory about the whereabouts of missing British teenager Jay Slater has been shared by the ex-cop involved in the hunt for murderer Raoul Moat.
The 19-year-old from Lancashire was reported missing a week ago (June 17) after he called his friend Lucy, telling her he was lost in a rural area of the island with only 1% battery left on his phone.
His last known location was half a mile north of Masca village. Despite ongoing efforts by emergency workers, including the Civil Guard, mountain rescue team and fire crews, the challenging terrain of the Rural de Teno park is proving difficult to search.

However, the search is now in its ninth day, with cops in Spain seemingly no closer to finding him. And when asked about it, former Northumbria Police chief constable Sue Sim told Talk TV’s Kevin O’Sullivan: “I still do think that, unfortunately, the fact of the matter is that this young man who had been out for three days at a concert, who has been described as being intoxicated when he left there, had gone back for whatever reason – which is unknown.
“Masca is extremely remote . . . an awful place if you’re lost in it. There are lots of chasms, lots of abyss – absolutely huge amounts of undergrowth. If anybody has fallen over, it would take days to recover somebody there.”
Her comments followed on from a plea she made when speaking to Sky News to hit out at the myriad of Facebook groups and social media posts in various places set up purely to either “help” find the 19-year-old or to make fun of it.
The search is now in its ninth day, with cops in Spain seemingly no closer to finding him. And when asked about what message she would give to the swarms of speculators online, Sue Sim told Niall Paterson: “Please do not spend time putting things onto social media. Please do not try and hamper this investigation in any way.”
