Jay Slater ‘seen watching Euros soccer on Tenerife coast’, mayor claims

Locals in Tenerife believe they may have seen missing teen Jay Slater watching the Euros, according to claims made by the mayor of a nearby town.

Jay, 19, vanished in Tenerife ten days ago and despite extensive search efforts involving helicopters, drones and sniffer dogs, there has been no sign of him.

The young bricklayer apprentice from Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire, had been enjoying a music festival with friends Lucy and Brad before he left with two British men he met during a night out. After spending the night at their Airbnb near Masca village, Jay disappeared the following morning on Monday, June 17.

But several locals in the town of Santiago del Teide now say they believe they may have spotted the teenager in the days following his disappearance. Mayor Emilio Jose Navarro said some locals who reported sightings of Jay have been interviewed by police, including a few who think they may have seen Jay on the coast watching Euros matches.

He also addressed the sighting of a figure on CCTV captured around 10 hours after Slater went missing.

Mayor Navarro said: “We know the police are investigating (the CCTV images). They have asked for the town hall’s security cameras and they are also working with the company that handles those cameras,” reports The Sun.

It comes as former Northumbria Police chief constable Sue Sim took to Sky News to hit out at the myriad of Facebook groups and social media posts in various places set up purely to either “help” find the 19-year-old or to make fun of it.

The search is now in its ninth day, with cops in Spain seemingly no closer to finding him. And when asked about what message she would give to the swarms of speculators online, Sue Sim told Niall Paterson: “Please do not spend time putting things onto social media. Please do not try and hamper this investigation in any way.”
