Serb hooligans batter German police with bottles and chairs forward of Euros exit

Serbian hooligans clashed with German police ahead of their Euro 2024 exit on Tuesday evening.

Serbia’s stay in Germany came to an end as they played out a bore draw with Denmark, meaning they finished bottom of Group C. However, the clash was overshadowed by violent clashes between hooligans and German police.

According to reports, at least 10 people, including nine police officers, were injured in the clashes. In a video that could be seen on social media, riot police can be seen closing in on the hooligans, who launched beer bottles and chairs at the forces.

Officers had searched a fan at Munich’s Marienplatz Square on suspicion of having fired off pyrotechnics at around 5pm on Tuesday, with more than 5,000 Serbia fans assembled on the square at that point, according to police.

However, the routine check triggered a “solidarity effect”, police said, and hooligans launched bottles and a chair at the officers. Police responded by deploying pepper spray and used batons.

A spokesman was unable to say on Wednesday morning whether any fans were injured in the clashes. However, nine police officers and one steward had been injured in the clash.

It comes after a video emerged last Thursday (June 21) of Serbia fans pushing a man off a train, also in Munich. And Serbian fans clashing with German police during an open training session ahead of their opener with England.
