Glastonbury followers shocked by guitarist’s resemblance to Paul Gascoigne

Fans of both football and music will have a difficult choice to make when watching TV in the next few days – will it be the Euros or Glastonbury?

But those watching PJ Harvey perform on the iconic Pyramid Stage today were seemingly treated to the best of both worlds.

Fans couldn’t help but compare the rock singer’s guitarist to England football legend Paul Gascoigne.

One shocked fan tweeted: ‘Is that Gazza playing guitar for PJ Harvey???’

Another said: ‘How long has Gazza been a guitarist in PJ Harvey’s band? Must be his twin.’

Someone added: ‘Great to see Gazza’s got a new gig…. lead guitarist with PJ Harvey at Glastonbury.’

Former footballer Gascoigne, nicknamed Gazza, retired in 2004 but is widely regarded as one of the best English players of all time.

He made 57 appearances for his country and played for a host of top sides including Tottenham, Newcastle, Lazio and Rangers.

Gascoigne is now 57 years old and has recently opened up about his new life in retirement and his battle for sobriety.

He went to rehab for a seventh time for alcohol addiction in 2014, attending a £6,000-a-month clinic in Southampton, and has even paid £20,000 to have anti-boozing pellets put into his stomach in a bid to stop drinking.

The former midfielder admitted during a 2021 interview with High Performance that he will ‘always be an alcoholic’.

He also revealed that he lives in his agent’s spare room in Poole – seven miles outside of Bournemouth.

So you can imagine people’s surprise when it appeared as if Gascoigne had taken to the main stage at Glastonbury.

But it was in fact John Parish – an established musician who has worked with PJ Harvey since 1995 as well as KT Tunstall and Tracy Chapman.

Parish, 65, was born in Somerset and now lives in Bristol – a mere two-hour drive away from his apparent twin Gasciogne.
