Jay Slater cops beg public to assist as hundreds head to island to see Ed Sheeran

Thousands of Ed Sheeran fans are set to descend on Tenerife, at the same time police officers have called on volunteers to help with the search for missing Brit Jay Slater.

Although Sheeran is performing 90 minutes away from the search area around Masca, chaos is set to ensue across the tiny Spanish island tomorrow (Saturday). Sheeran will take to the stage at the CD Tenerife football stadium, with Tenerife’s main airport directly in between the search site and the gig venue.

Officials had already announced huge changes to local transport, road closures and more, with the Mayor of Santa Cruz, José Manuel Bermúdez, “inviting attendees to arrive early to avoid crowds and follow the instructions of security personnel”.

And the councillor for Transport, Evelyn Alonso, said: “We have implemented all the security measures possible for an event of this magnitude so as not to hinder vehicle and pedestrian traffic, with the modifications and security areas correctly signposted and marked.”

But for those flying in, it’ll now be far busier than it would have been after the Guardia Civil pleaded with the public to help aide them in the search for Jay Slater.

The 19-year-old from Lancashire was reported missing in Tenerife more than a week ago (June 17) after he called his friend Lucy, telling her he was lost in a rural area of the island with only 1% battery left on his phone.

His last known location was half a mile north of Masca village. Despite ongoing efforts by emergency workers, including the Civil Guard, mountain rescue team and fire crews, the challenging terrain of the Rural de Teno park is proving difficult to search.

But in a lengthy statement, the Guardia Civil said: “The Guardia Civil prepares and coordinates a large search to find the young British man missing in the village of Masca. The collaboration of all those Volunteer Associations is requested: Civil Protection, Firefighters, etc., and even private volunteers who are experts in the abrupt search terrain.

“The massive search will be carried out on Saturday, 29 June from 9am. Bearing in mind that this is an abrupt, rocky area, full of unevenness and with a multitude of ravines, paths and roads, the collaboration of all those Associations of Volunteers who can help in this raid that is intended to be carried out in a directed and coordinated manner is requested.”
