Mystery of the Wetherspoons purple plate and what it means if you happen to get one

If there’s one thing that can be said about Wetherspoons customers it’s that they know what to expect.

The cheap and cheerful boozer – home to curry nights and bargain beer – is the much-loved establishment on many a high street. But over the years, people have been jolted by the rare sight of something a little out of the ordinary and it comes in the form of a red plate.

The crimson crockery has even left some so perplexed, they’ve taken to social media to discuss it. In several threads on Reddit, many who are accustomed to the trademark blue plate, have questioned what the red plate could possibly mean.

A picture was uploaded in the mildlyinteresting subreddit earlier this month along with the caption: “My BF got a red plate in Wetherspoons.”

Many were quick to offer their theories.

“If you get the red plate in Spoons, take it to the bar and you get a free drink,” said one person.

Another added siren emojis and wrote: “YOU GOT THE RED PLATE.”

While one commented: “Never seen a red one before.”

The topic has come up in several posts in recent years. On another thread, one said: “Red plates definitely existed at one point. Uncommon but they were in some pubs.”

Another Reddit user shared their picture of the plate along with the question: “Any of you ever seen a red spoons plate? Never saw one while I was working there.”

One commented: “I think you’ve accidentally wandered into an alternative dimension.”

Another asked: “Are you their millionth customer?”

“You found a shiny,” piped in another.

They are a rare find

But fear not punters, the Daily Star has finally got to the bottom of the mystery.

A Wetherspoons spokesman told us: “Wetherspoon did trial a red plate in a small number of pubs for use for children’s meals, to ensure all children’s meals were served on a cold plate.

‌”The company has moved on since then and just launched a melamine plate for the whole children’s menu which is in line with the design of the children’s menu.

‌”But there will be stock of the old red plate in circulation, until they break.

‌”No plan to change from the standard blue patterned plate any time soon.”
