Amazon flogged Jay Slater conspiracy books simply days after he disappeared

Amazon is under fire after being accused of selling books peddling Jay Slater conspiracy theories only days after his disappearance.

As the search continues into a third week for the missing 19-year-old Brit, Amazon has been working as the intermediary of authors who used AI to speed produce conspiracy books that are available in paperback or on Kindle.

One of the books, which appeared to have been taken down as of today (Saturday, June 29), was called Jay Slater Biography: The Story of a 19-year-old in Tenerife, the Mirror reports.

The book’s blurb on Amazon read: “This is a heart-wrenching and uplifting tribute to a life that was gone too soon but will never be forgotten. His disappearance left a gaping hole in the lives of those who loved him and a community that was forever changed.”

Not only did this author attempt to cash in on the tragic circumstances of a missing teenager, but he also implied that he knew Jay’s story, which remains unknowable until he is found.

The Mirror began to dig for Jay Slater books on Amazon after Buckingham Palace released a statement criticising the website for allowing the sale of conspiracy books around Princess Kate’s disappearance.

Chantal Korcz of the charity Missing People spoke out against capitalising on a viral yet devastating story. She told The Mirror: “The disappearance of Jay Slater calls for our united support. Let’s be mindful of our words and actions.”

An Amazon spokesperson said: “We have content guidelines governing which books can be listed for sale and promptly investigate any book when a concern is raised. We invest significant time and resources to ensure our guidelines are followed, and remove books that do not adhere to these guidelines. The title in question is no longer available.”
