Arsenal legend hilariously pranks Jeff Stelling with Kylie Minogue courting story

Ex-England star Paul Merson managed to fool football host Jeff Stelling into thinking that he dated Kylie Minogue.

The former Arsenal ace, 56, revealed he once asked out the pop legend at the Brit Awards. Stelling, 69, was left convinced that the pair had dated for three months before Merson revealed he was joking and she instead gave him the red card.

Speaking on Stelling’s Football’s Greatest: Euros podcast, the Sky Sports pundit was asked by a fan if he had asked Kylie out.

He said: “I was at the Brit Awards. I got invited. My agent knew people at Sony Records, and I was tanked up and I went up to her and said ‘would you go out with me?”.

Stelling asked: “How did she let you down?” to which Merson replied in a serious tone: “She didn’t, we went out for about three months, and then I broke it up”. Merson then revealed: “Like f*** I did!”. He added: “No, she said no straight away and a bouncer came over and said ‘get away’.”

Ahead of England’s last 16 clash against Slovakia at Euro 2024, Merson was particularly damning regarding the team’s performances thus far during his chat with Stelling.

He stated: “It was like watching a kids football match. ‘I’ll play when I get the ball but when I haven’t got it, it’s your turn’, and that’s what I’m finding with England at the moment. There’s no movement, there’s no nothing and that comes down to confidence. Confidence is a big thing.

He then added: “We’ve gone through and now we’ve got to peak, this is the time now to steadily peak and then by the time we get to the semi-finals, I hope then that we’re flying and everybody’s got confidence. Because, at the moment, it is shot – the players’ confidence is gone and they don’t really want the ball.”
