Gary Neville fumes at Southgate’s choice and claims one selection is ‘unlawful’

An angry Gary Neville labelled Gareth Southgate‘s exclusion of Trent Alexander-Arnold against Slovakia as “illegal”.

England put in another dire first half performance on Sunday in their last 16 clash against Slovakia at Euro 2024 where they entered the break 1-0 down, courtesy of an Ivan Schranz goal.

The poor showings from the Three Lions this summer have been a recurring theme and on the verge of another elimination from a major tournament, the former Manchester United and England defender raged at Southgate’s selections, specifically the absence of Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Speaking on the ITV broadcast alongside Roy Keane and Ian Wright, Neville told Mark Pougatch: “It is illegal that Trent Alexander-Arnold isn’t playing in a game like today. The best footballer we’ve ever seen at right back or full back in this country”.

The 49-year-old’s statement went down well with plenty of social media users with one X user writing: “Gary Neville speaking on behalf of the nation there” while another praised the analysis of the punditry trio who urged Southgate to make instant changes: “Good on Gary Neville, Roy Keane and Ian Wright for calling it absolutely right. There is something clearly wrong in this approach”.

Neville also insisted on the Three Lions boss bringing on Anthony Gordon and Cole Palmer at half-time with a third user agreeing with the changes: “Gary Neville is speaking facts!! Get Gordon on for Foden! Get Trent on as RB for Trippier! Get Palmer on for Saka! Cant wait any longer otherwise England will struggle coming back from this”.

Not everyone was a fan of Neville’s take on the Liverpool talisman with one X user slamming the pundit for changing his opinion on the Englishman: “Hasn’t he spent half of his punditry career putting Trent down? It’s easy enough to change your tune at half time of a disaster”.
