Michael Smith tears into Peter Wright for ‘s***’ after England win World Cup

Darts ace Michael Smith lobbed a savage dart at Peter Wright after suggesting his team-mate Luke Humphries was the sole force behind England’s World Cup of Darts victory.

‘Bully Boy’ and Humphries showed great chemistry to clinch the title in Stuttgart this past Sunday. The English duo ousted Austria with a smashing 10-6 win in the finals, marking England’s fifth world-beating record and their first triumph since 2016.

With both Humphries and Smith on fiery form, Smith let slip that a cheeky provocation from Scotland’s very own Wright fuelled their determination just prior to the quarter-final clash. Wright quipped at Humphries carrying the weight of the team, mockingly querying about the state of his shoulders.

But the freshly minted 2023 world champ Smith wasn’t entertaining any jests, especially after highlighting Wright’s lacklustre 78 average. Spilling the backstage beans during the tournament, Smith retorted: “Even better, and then before the semi-final, when was it? The quarters. Peter Wright walks past, asking Luke how his shoulder was.”

“The guy’s just averaged 78 and he’s tried giving me sh*t,” reports the Express. “I was like ‘what are you doing? ‘ and then had an argument, or not an argument, but a bit of banter backstage.”

Broadening the attack, Smith added: “That guy should have some strong shoulders because he’s been holding the Premier League up for two years.” Wright’s jibes clearly got under Smith’s skin.

He admitted: “He annoyed me today and I think that spurred me on in that semi-final. I’ve never gave it that large ever. I needed to get that out because it really annoyed me! “.

Michael Smith didn’t hold back his thoughts on Peter Wright, tweeting: “The guy’s just averaged 78 and he’s tried giving me sh*t, what are you doing? ” after England’s victory over Scotland in the semi-final, setting up their win against Austria.

World champ Luke Humphries was buzzing after the win, confessing it was the biggest high since his Alexandra Palace glory earlier this year. “I felt the biggest buzz since winning the Worlds. We really wanted this. We really believed we could win it and after that first game we played, we clicked,” he gushed.

Humphries also praised his team’s advantage, saying, “You’ve got a cheat code, the world number one and number three against the field, it’s quite tough for everyone else but after that first game we played and we clicked. We were only worried about ourselves.”

He wrapped up with confidence and hope for the future: “We knew if we played our best, we could do it and we did. I just hope we get to come back next year and defend it together as champions.”
