UEFA investigates Jude Bellingham’s gesture over ‘respectable conduct’ at Euro 2024

UEFA to investigate gesture by England’s Jude Bellingham for possible violation of “decent conduct” rules at Euro 2024.

UEFA released a statement on Monday which read: “A UEFA Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector will conduct a disciplinary investigation regarding a potential violation of the basic rules of decent conduct by the English Football Association player, Jude Bellingham, having allegedly occurred in the scope of this match.

“Information on this matter will be made available in due course.”

Bellingham posted on X about the gesture in the hours after the match, saying: “An inside joke gesture towards some close friends who were at the game. Nothing but respect for how that Slovakia team played tonight.”

The incident isn’t the only one from the match UEFA is probing, as it also announced that crowd disturbances and “lighting of fireworks” are also being looked into.

The full statement reads: “Disciplinary proceedings have been instigated in accordance with Article 55 of the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations (DR) following the UEFA European Championship Round of 16 match between England and Slovakia (2-1) played on 30 June 2024 in Gelsenkirchen, Germany.

“The UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body (CEDB) will decide on the matter in due course.”

It doesn’t clarify which set of fans they are investigating, however. And UEFA has not yet stated how this could impact on England’s quarter final with Switzerland on Saturday, if at all.

The FA has not yet responded to the charge against Bellingham, or the two investigations relating to the Slovakia game, but the Daily Star has reached out to them for a comment.
