Crowds use their jackets to guard themselves from drizzle

Crowds at the Henley Royal Regatta were pictured with glum faces while using their jackets to protect themselves from the drizzle today.

The guests arrived in their finery this morning but it is turning out to be an overcast start to the first day of the event held on the banks of The River Thames.

The Met Office forecasted sunny spells and scattered showers today after last week’s heatwave scorched the UK.

While the rain is mainly affecting Scotland and Northern Ireland, those at the Royal Regatta will be crushed to see the dark clouds overhead.

Those gathered to watch the Wimbledon Championships were also pictured sporing bright coasts, coverings and umbrellas.

The breezy and cloudy conditions will spread in the far northwest later with outbreaks of rain.

Tonight, rain will spread eastwards across Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England as the south remains cloudy.

But temperatures are still hovering around 20C in some areas today, with the rain easing in the south as the day goes on.

The Henley Royal Regatta is a rowing event held annually on the River Thames and was established on 26 March 1839.

Depending on the day you attend, daily admission prices range between £34 – £56 per person.

The 2024 Regatta will be raced over six days from Tuesday, 2 July to Sunday, 7 July. Racing is expected to finish at around 19:30 each day, except on Sunday when the last race will be at 16:30.

It comes after provisional Met Office figures suggested June 2024 was a dry, cool and sunny month compared to the UK’s long-term average.
