Jay Slater TikTok sleuth claims thriller sun shades present in search have been ‘thrown’

The mystery pair of sunglasses found by a TikTok sleuth during the search for missing Jay Slater were “thrown” on purpose, it has been claimed.

The search for the 19-year-old was officially called off over the weekend, nearly two weeks after he went missing. The Lancashire lad was reported missing in Tenerife on June 17 after he called his friend Lucy, telling her he was lost in a rural area of the island with only 1% battery left on his phone.

His last known location was half a mile north of Masca village. Despite ongoing efforts by emergency workers, including the Civil Guard, mountain rescue team and fire crews, the challenging terrain of the Rural de Teno park is proving difficult to search.

It was revealed last week that TikToksleuths were flying out to help, with the most famous among them being Paul Arnott, 29. He had been in Tenerife already searching for Jay – unofficially and without Guardia Civil backing – with the family later turning to him for help.

Yesterday (Monday, July 1) he took to TikTok, to claim a new clue had been found by a bloke called “Chris”, and said: “There’s two bits of information I’m going off, one of which is a ‘three word’ GPS, and the other is going to be a pair of sunglasses that were found by a man called Chris.”

And now Chris has come forward to share images of the glasses he found on TikTok – which appear to look similar to the ones seen on Jay’s face in photos takes in the days leading up to the disappearance.

Speaking to Mail Online, Chris Pennington suggested the glasses had been thrown from the area where Jay’s phone was last known to have been active, and said: “I’ve done a bit of hiking and mountaineering and wanted to help out the family. They are desperate to find their lad and with my background I thought I could do my bit.

“I parked up near the viewpoint near where the phone last pinged and found them on the ground near some bushes and in the area where they have been searching.

“I don’t know if they are Jay’s but as a duty of care I picked them up and told the Guardia Civil about them. They told me not to touch them if possible and wrap them in paper not plastic and I did and handed them in.

“The sunglasses were about 50 metres from the road near a tunnel I wanted to search. I saw them glinting in the sun and picked them up.”
