John Terry blasts BBC for ‘disgraceful’ Ronaldo caption after penalty tears

Ex-England skipper John Terry slammed the BBC’s coverage of Cristiano Ronaldo‘s penalty fluff against Slovenia as a “disgrace”.

Ronaldo, 39, had his spot-kick thwarted by Slovenia’s goalie Jan Oblak during the nail-biting extra-time of the Euro 2024 round of 16 game. The miss brought the seasoned pro to tears, but he pulled himself together to slot home during the triumphant penalty shootout.

Fans around the world mocked the former Manchester United star for his crying, but the BBC’s on-screen jibe ‘Misstiano Penaldo’ while discussing Oblak’s save prompted Terry to blast them on Instagram, saying “BBC this is a disgrace”. The Chelsea legend’s own penalty heartache in the 2008 Champions League final against United gives him a personal insight into such high-stakes moments.

Ronaldo also missed a penalty in that shootout, but it was United who lifted the trophy after 43-year-old Terry famously slipped on the wet turf in Moscow and cried over blowing his side’s chances. Post-match last night, Ronaldo reflected, “I could have given the national team the advantage, but I didn’t manage it, Oblak saved,” and admitted, “I didn’t miss once during the year, when I needed it most Oblak saved”. reports the Mirror.

He expressed mixed emotions: “It’s a feeling of sadness and joy at the same time, but the most important thing is the progress, the team deserved it. Slovenia spent almost the entire time defending, the team deserves congratulations, especially our goalkeeper who made three good saves [in the shootout].”

Confronting his vulnerability, Ronaldo confessed, “Even the strongest people have their days, I was down and I was sad because the team needed me… I can’t do it, I’ll talk later, I’ll talk later.”

Porto’s number one, Diogo Costa, turned into Portugal’s knight in shining armour. While Oblak managed to stop a penalty during extra-time, it was Costa who became the shootout superstar, blocking shots from Josip Ilicic, Jure Balkovec and Benjamin Verbic.

“This is probably the best game of my life,” Costa beamed, as quoted by The Beeb. “I am focused on doing what I had to do. I went with my gut feeling.”

“Of course, we had analysed the penalty takers, but players change and they change how they shoot. I am very happy and very excited to have helped the team.”

Next up for Portugal is a spicy clash with France in the quarter-finals, serving up a sizzling repeat of the 2016 final. It’s a chance for Ronaldo to settle some personal scores, after he hobbled off in that match only to see his squad snatch the trophy with Eder’s heroics.

France, who were runners-up in their group to Austria, really had to dig deep to nick a win against Belgium earlier on Monday. With the clock ticking down, Randal Kolo Muani’s shanked effort took a lucky bounce off Jan Vertonghen to hand Les Bleus the win.
