How to get an emergency proxy vote for General Election tomorrow
Brits will go to the polls in a historic General Election tomorrow to choose the government for the next five years.
Whatever the issues that matter most to you, it’s vital that you vote to have your say on how the country is run. If you’re registered to vote but an unforeseen circumstance means that you will not be able to get to the polling station on July 4, you may still be able to get an emergency proxy vote.
The deadline for normal proxy votes, where someone goes to the polling station on your behalf, has already passed. But under certain conditions, you could still be entitled to an emergency proxy vote.
According to the Electoral Commission – who set the rules for how UK elections are run – this must be a reason that you were not aware of before the normal proxy vote deadline. This might include being taken to hospital, or being forced to work away last minute.
What’s a proxy?
It’s the name for trusted person who votes on your behalf. This could be a friend, family member or carer. One person can be a proxy for up to two people, or up to four people if at least two of them are registered to vote from abroad. This person will need to be registered to vote.
Who is eligible for an emergency proxy vote?
Circumstances where you may be able to apply for an emergency proxy include:
- You have a medical emergency
- You are away for work
- Your photo ID is lost, stolen, destroyed or damaged after the deadline to apply for a Voter Authority Certificate has passed and you want to vote in an election which requires photo ID.
- If your Anonymous Elector’s Document is lost, stolen, destroyed or damaged.
How do I apply for one?
You should contact the electoral services team at your local council as soon as possible. The Electoral Commission have a web page where you can find out the council responsible in your area using your postcode.
What’s the deadline for an emergency proxy vote?
Emergency proxy applications can be made up to 5pm on July 4. Your proxy will need to know where your polling station is, and will need to be there before 10pm when polls close.
Do I need to be registered to vote?
Yes. You can only apply for an emergency proxy vote if you’re already registered to vote.
What time do polls open?
Polls open at 7am tomorrow, and will close at 10pm. As long as the proxy is in the queue at the polling station by 10pm, they will be able to cast your vote.
