Jude Bellingham’s tremendous purpose saves Brit pubs with punters downing 55 extra pints
Jude Bellingham’s last kick wonder goal to keep England’s Euro 2024 dream alive could save the British boozer, boffins say.
As Bellingham’s overhead kick hit the back of the net millions of jubilant fans across the UK watching the action on TV hit the bottle – pumping an extra £9 million into pub tills.
Jude’s equaliser – which sent the last-16 clash with Slovakia into extra time – meant the UK’s 35,000 bars flogged two million more pints. And Harry Kane’s extra-time winner means landlords can look forward to another sensational session when the Three Lions play Switzerland in Saturday’s quarter-final.

Research by market analysts the Oxford Partnership showed the 60-second double goal salvo meant every pub in the country sold an extra 55 pints – putting £261 of additional income into their tills.
The number of customers was up 3.2% for the match – and their “dwell time” – the period they remained in the pub – rockets 14.3% to an average of 138 minutes compared to non-England match days.
Stout sales were up 52% while fans went wild for lager and fruit cider too.
Rural boozers – many of which have faced closure as they struggled to lure back customers after the pandemic – got the biggest sales boost.
A spokesman for Market Watch – which published the study – highlighted the value of England’s performance to pub survival.
“In the group stages England games drove an additional 203 pints per pub leading to a 31.5% uplift in draught sales versus the same day’s average in 2024,’’ they said.
“This means pubs earnt an additional £925 per pub in revenue.’’
The spokesman said when England reached the last-16 of Euro 2020 weekly sales grew by 3.6%.
But “the really good news” is sales this time were “even better,” the spokesman said.
“All eyes turned to England on Sunday’s key game versus Slovakia when we saw a staggering 11.4 million pints sold as pubs benefitted from extra time after Jude Bellingham’s spectacular overhead kick revived not just the team’s hopes, but also pubs’ across the country with the prospect of a quarter-final against Switzerland at 5pm this coming Saturday.
The spokesman said it was a “strong weekend’ and “welcome boost” for pubs.
The UK economy is set to receive a £419.5m consumer spending boost as a result of Bellingham’s belter, according to savings analyst VoucherCodes.co.uk.
Nearly 25m Brits are expected to tune into Saturday’s game from pubs, restaurants, fan zones, garden parties or living rooms.
That will give hospitality venues a £108m boost as revellers tuck into 13.4m pints during the match.
Around 19 million fans tuning in from home will spend £311.5m on retail goods.
Fans are expected to splash out £35m on sportswear, £22m on England merchandise and £12m on pizza ovens and BBQs for football garden parties.
VoucherCodes.co.uk savings expert Anita Naik said: “With anticipation levels at an all-time high as England get set to face Switzerland during their quarter-finals clash it’s wonderful to see that millions of Brits will be showcasing their support for the Three Lions both at home and at hospitality venues up and down the country.’’
