Foden jokes Bellingham ‘saved him’ from doing child feeds with Euro 2024 aim

Phil Foden is desperate to milk Jude Bellingham’s wonder goal at Euro 2024.

Because it has spared him from having to go home to do the night feeds with his newborn son, who arrived last week. No-one had a better view of Bellingham’s last-gasp overhead kick against Slovakia than Foden.

He was walking around the pitch and back to the dugout when Bellingham pounced to take the game into extra time, which England won 2-1 thanks to Harry Kane’s winner.

And while the whole bench celebrated, all Foden could think of was how it saved him from having some sleepless nights back in Cheshire. Because England now face Switzerland in a crunch quarter final in Dusseldorf this weekend instead.

Foden said: “I thought ‘I’m 30 seconds away from doing baby feeds at home here’! So thanks to Jude for that, thanks for doing it, he saved me there.

“But honestly, it’s unbelievable, what he did, yeah. It just sums Jude up. He never gives up until the end.” Foden believes the comeback win against Slovakia in Gelsenkirchen can breathe new life into what has been a limp England so far.

And Foden has rubbished suggestions him and Bellingham cannot play together in the same Three Lions team. He said: “I don’t agree with that. I feel we do work good together.

“It’s just, like I said, it’s just the way the games have gone sometimes and the way football works.

“I feel like the last game we did build on it really well, in terms of keeping the ball a lot more, we piled pressure on in the end, and I feel like it can hopefully click together in the next game. The way we won the (Slovakia) game, it’s helped us in a way.

“I feel like it’s given us so much more belief now, going into the next games, to win it in the way we did. We have to remain focused now, because we know we can do a lot better than we’ve done, so it’s all about growing.

“We know we can be a lot better, but it’s all about now not dwelling on the past just looking forward to the future. I feel that’s all we can do you know, just try and make it right.”

There is a clamour for Foden to be picked in the same No.10 role he excelled in with Premier League champions Manchester City last season.

But despite admitting he feels a little frustrated, Foden believes the chance for England to go on and win Euro 2024 is still there, because the tournament is wide open.

He added: “I have been a little frustrated. I am not going to lie. I want to try and score, do better things for England. And like I said, it has not worked out but it is about keeping a good mentality.

“I have not been the best player in the Premier League to come here and not show it. I feel like every game I am moving forward and hopefully I can put on some good performances. That has always been my aim for England.

“I feel like it has been a tight tournament. There’s not been one (team) that’s run away with it. It just shows the level of the teams involved.”
