Pub wrongly accuses group of £150 dine and sprint in public shaming gaffe

A pub landlord has been left red-faced after falsely accusing a group of four diners of doing a dine and dash.

The Horse and Jockey in Tideswell, Buxton, hit out at the diners for chomping down on £27 10z ribeye steaks and gammon with pints of ale and larger – racking up a bill of £150 before ‘doing a runner‘. Manager Sam Watson blasted the ‘shocking behaviour’ online, posting a photo of the alleged thieves in the hope they’d cough up.

He argued that the hospitality industry is only just getting ‘back on its feet’ following a ‘difficult’ Winter and losing such a large sum of money ‘really matters to us’. However, the punters contacted the pub to clear the air, and prove their innocence.

It now transpires that the four customers did in fact pay for their meal, and Watson has issued a grovelling apology for any harm caused.

The pub has apologised and withdrawn its accusation

“We want to sincerely apologise to the people involved because we have now learnt that they did in fact pay for their meal,” Watson told Mail Online. “One member of staff took the group’s order and a second member of staff took payment. However, he did not run the payment through the till system.”

Watson added that the mistake made it look as though the customers had ‘left without paying’. Despite acknowledging the blunder was an ‘honest mistake’, he confirmed the employee had been let go of – or in his words, ‘dismissed’.

“The people involved have been in touch with the pub,” he continued. “I’m yet to speak to them but when I do I will apologise for our mistake.”
