Piers Morgan shares image that defines election night time after ‘Tory massacre’

Piers Morgan has shared the image he hailed as ‘defining General Election night’ after a whirlwind 24 hours in UK politics.

The outspoken broadcaster appeared to poke fun at Jacob Rees-Mogg after the Conservative MP lost his North East Somerset seat with Labour’s Dan Norris securing 20,739 votes, while Rees-Mogg managed to receive a mere 15,420 votes. Rees-Mogg is just one of several major Conservative MPs who lost their seats, along with the nation’s shortest Prime Minister, Liz Truss, Grant Shapps and Penny Mordaunt.

Taking to his Instagram page, Piers, 59, shared a snap of Rees-Mogg alongside Barmy Brunch who was standing for the Official Monster Raving Loony Party. In view of his 2.2 million followers, Piers said: “Absolute abattoir-scale bloodbath for the Tories. This photo sums up their night… Jacob Rees-Mogg finding out he’s lost his seat while standing next to a bloke in a baked bean balaclava. #ukelections2024.”

Responding to Piers’ upload, fans couldn’t help but crack jokes with one writing: “In Heinz sight, he probably regrets doing it…” A second added: “Bet that blokes head produces a bit of gas.” “Peak British politics,” commented a third. A fourth laughed: “This has made my day.”

Barmy, who opted to wear a baked bean printed balaclava received 211 votes, while Reform’s Paul MacDonnell secured 7,424. Despite losing his seat, Rees-Mogg who had previously won the seat in 2010, 2015, 2017 and 2019 went on to congratulate Dan Norris and Labour’s Keir Starmer who “led his party to what seems to be a historic victory.”

Speaking after the vote, Sir Rees-Mogg said: “May I begin by giving my warmest congratulations to Dan Norris, who has been a servant of North East Somerset or Wansdyke as it then was before and I am sure will be a devoted constituency MP in the future. And congratulate Sir Keir Starmer who has led his party to what seems to be a historic victory. And this is the great virtue of our democracy, so I congratulate both of them.”

He went on to thank his agent, campaign director and constituency staff who had “worked so hard over the last 14 years”. He said: “And one final thought, from Caractacus Potts, and that is from the ashes of disaster grow the roses of success. So thank you very much everybody, and good night.”

Today, outgoing Prime Minister Rishi Suank is expected to meet with King Charles in order to dissolve his government following the dramatic defeat. Incoming Prime Minister Keir Starmer will meet with His Majesty just moments later, with the monarch asking Starmer to form a government in his name.
