Failed Tory candidate Brendan Clarke-Smith makes hilarious Big Brother plea
Failed Tory candidate Brendan Clarke-Smith has made a hilarious plea to take part in the next series of Big Brother.
The former Conservative Party deputy chairman, who suffered a brutal defeat to Labour candidate Jo White over the Worksop and Bassetlaw seat on Thursday night, took to Twitter /X to look for work after being booted out of parliament following the election. Brendan reposted a tweet from The Sun’s political editor Kate Ferguson, who revealed that ITV bosses are looking for a “big political name” to take part in this year’s series.
“Big Brother producers are looking for a big political name to take part in this year’s series. They have already approached Red Wall Mayor Ben Houchen – but he has turned them down. They are ringing round other politicians. More in our gossip column tomorrow….” she posted. Brendan then reposted her tweet, and joked that his double-barrel surname should fit the requirements of a “big name”.

“Don’t suppose they are still looking for people?” he wrote alongside a laughing face emoji. “The hyphen makes it a big name.” The politician has faced a series of embarrassing and controversial gaffes throughout his career, such as defending a convicted racist, and calling food banks a “political weapon”.
Last year, Brendan launched a fundraising campaign for ex-MP Bob Stewart, who was convicted of a racially aggravated public order offence in 2022. And at an election hustings in 2019, he said food banks were being used as a “top up” and a “political weapon”, and claimed people were using them just to get freebies. “If you keep saying to people that you’re going to give stuff away, then you’re going to have an increase I’m afraid,” he said.

Earlier this year, he stood down as MP after former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak pushed forward with his plans to deport immigrants to Rwanda. Now, he’s out of a job as he lost his seat to Labour, as Sir Keir Starmer ’s party swept to a landslide victory after 14 years of the Tories.
Earlier this year, it was rumoured ITV bosses had a huge budget to entice big names to sign up for Big Brother, but sources claimed producers had ruled out reaching out to any politicians or serving MPs. There was outrage over Nigel Farage and Matt Hancock appearing on I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here, as well as former Commons Speaker John Bercow starring on the US version of The Traitors. “Bosses also feel like they aren’t quite right for the mix they’re trying to achieve for CBB,” the insider told The Sun.
