Premier League boss informed to snub England and never change Gareth Southgate

Newcastle star Fabian Schar wants Eddie Howe to snub the England job and stay at St James’ Park instead.

‌Gareth Southgate, 53, is expected to step down as Three Lions boss following the Euros this summer. Howe is one of the favourites to replace Southgate – and is on the FA’s shortlist of potential candidates to be the next England boss.

It remains to be seen if Howe, 46, would be interested in succeeding Southgate, who has proved one of the most successful England bosses of all time.

But Schar hopes Howe doesn’t turn his back on Newcastle if he’s given the chance to boss his country. The Switzerland defender will line up against England in Saturday’s Euro 2024 quarter final in Dusseldorf.

He said: “Well, actually I hope he will stay at Newcastle. Because if you see the work he’s done over last few years, I think you know he has a lot of quality and knows how to handle a big club and team.‌

“I mean, for myself as well, he did very well and I’m really happy to have him as a manager. So hopefully he stays at Newcastle. That’s the only thing I can think of.”

Howe began life as a manager at Bournemouth after ending his playing days as a centre-back. As the youngest manager in the English Football League, he saved the Cherries from relegation to the Conference National, then oversaw their promotion to League One.

After a disappointing and brief spell at Burnley, he returned to the south coast and achieved three promotions in a seven-year period, taking the minnows to the Premier League, where they stayed for five years, before suffering relegation to the Championship.

He then resigned, but returned to the game with Newcastle, where he took the Magpies to the Champions League by finishing fourth and also the League Cup final in 2023, before a seventh-placed finish last term.
