Inside Jay Slater’s household life like trolled mum who’s godmother to Corrie star

Life in Tenerife is slowly returning to normal but the same can’t be said for the distraught family of Jay Slater.

The missing Brit’s loved ones are still in the Canary Islands desperate for answers as the search for the missing 19-year-old apprentice bricklayer continues.

Jay was on holiday when he disappeared after a night out at the NRG festival at Papagayo nightclub in Playa de las Americas on June 17.

There have been frantic searches for the youngster and five big mysteries remain – from the ‘Rolex theft’ to ‘fleeing Airbnb scared’.

And while others in the region move on with their lives, the vanished lad’s family keep hunting for clues – and below we look inside his home life.

Jay is from Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire and after he was reported missing, his mum, Debbie Duncan, rushed out to the sunkissed island.

Giving an insight into her son, she told the BBC he was a “popular boy” with “hundreds of friends” before adding: “He’s just a great person who everyone wanted to be with. He’s good looking, he’s a popular boy. He’s gorgeous, he’s beautiful. He’s my baby.”

In a later statement she said: “Words cannot describe the agony and the pain we are experiencing. He is our beautiful boy with his whole life ahead of him and we just want to find him.”

Jay is an apprentice at Accrington and Rossendale College and after his disappearance a spokesperson said they were “deeply concerned” about him.

Debbie – who has been trolled since Jay went missing with vile Karen Matthews comparisons – is the godmother to ex-Coronation Street star Vicky Entwistle, who played Janice Battersby. She asked people to “please pray for Jay” before saying she “hopes to God they find him.”

The devestated mum is not in a relationship with Jay’s father but her partner, Andy Watson, stayed at the family home in Oswaldtwistle while she joined the search.

Speaking back on June 19, Jay’s stepdad Andy, 63, told Lancashire Live: “She’s in bits and asking for privacy. Nothing has changed and more family are flying out this morning.”

He added that Jay was “very streetwise” and “no mug” and said: “So many people have got in touch via Facebook. Loads have been sharing Debbie’s posts and every mum who has a child out there has gone to help.”

Debbie was joined in Tenerife by several worried family members including one relative called Fiona Duncan who wrote online: “Myself, Jay’s uncle and sister in law fly out today to search for Jay. I just want to thank everyone for their kind words and support. We will find him. No negativity just strength and positivity please.”

Also on the ground is Jay’s father, Warren Slater, his older brother, Zak Slater, 21, and his uncle, Glen Duncan.

In recent days they were seen with a local hiking group searching Barranco Juan Lopez – the gorge where Jay’s phone was last located.

The morning after his night out, he made a panicked call to his friend Lucy to say he was lost in the “middle of nowhere” and needed water. It would have taken him 11 hours to walk back to his hotel and he claimed his phone only had one per cent battery remaining.

And speaking to The Mirror, the frustrated dad, 58, said “everything stinks” and he added: “Tell me where I look, I can only go off the last sighting, the woman in that restaurant saw him going the wrong way. Which human being lets a young boy go the wrong way? Everything stinks. It’s just a riddle and I don’t know the answer.”

Jay was last seen leaving an Airbnb in the north of the island close to Masca after spending the night partying at Playa de las Americas.

He left with two blokes – one being convicted drug dealer Ayub Qassim – who were spoken to by Spanish investigators who said they were “not relevant” to the case.

However, this is something Jay’s father is still upset by and he said: “My starting position, I’ve always said this from day one, ask the two men who’ve taken him. And then start from there.

His family are trying to stay hopeful that Jay will be found safe and well

“If you and me in England had taken a young girl to the Lake District, do you think they would have let us go back to Spain? We’re going round and round in circles. The Spanish police, you can’t go screaming and shouting at them because they don’t do anything.

“If you start screaming and shouting they won’t do anything even more. If they want to go and search a house they have to go to court first.”

Glen Duncan, 41, brother of Debbie, also joined the search and described every day as being “just torture” before adding: “We’ve just been out with some Spanish volunteers. They’ve been through it by foot and the dogs, there’s obviously been areas searched by helicopter and drones. For me, he’s not up here. That’s what I get the impression of.”

And in a plea to reporters, he asked them to “just keep it out there” as the family attempts to save the case from being forgotten.

It is now more than three weeks since Jay was last seen and the mystery continues to haunt his loved ones who are trying to stay hopeful of a positive outcome.
