Angela Rayner outfit evoked Ali Baba, Andrew Pierce tells The Reaction

Angela Rayner‘s Downing Street outfit choice on her first day as Deputy Prime Minister evokes both Ali Baba and Cherie Blair, Daily Mail columnist Andrew Pierce told this week’s The Reaction.

Hosts Sarah Vine and Andrew have been picking through the first few days of Sir Keir Starmer‘s government.

This week, they have spoken about Labour’s housing plans, the impact Reform’s five MPs will have – and the fashion challenges of being a female politician.

Discussing Ms Rayner’s outfit on the day she travelled to No 10 to be appointed Deputy PM by Sir Keir, Andrew said: ‘The trousers didn’t fit – they looked like Ali Baba trousers.

‘When Blair became Labour leader in 1994 – that’s how long I’ve been doing this job – Cherie came out and I said to the man next to her, ‘What is Cherry [sic] wearing?’

‘He said, ‘It’s Cherie’ – the man next to me was of course Alastair Campbell.

‘And I said, ‘Well, she looks like Ali Baba, with her Ali Baba slippers on. One of the papers tomorrow is going to have her on a magic carpet. They did – this paper.’

Sarah said that it is ‘very difficult to make that call about what to wear’ for Downing Street.

‘If she’d looked in a mirror she could not possibly have gone down Downing Street looking like that,’ Andrew replied.

Sarah then recalled having to go and do the Brexit vote with her then husband Michael Gove.

‘Honestly, the outfit I wore will haunt me until the day I die,’ she said.

‘I literally looked like I’d got dressed in a skip in the dark.’
