Ryanair pilots killed in horror crash travelling to Liverpool Airport
A pair of Ryanair pilots have died on their way to a UK airport. The men were involved in a collision on the M62 as they travelled to Liverpool Airport in a taxi.
The crash occurred at 5.31am on Thursday, July 11. Today Matt Greenhalgh, 28, and Jamie Fernandes, 24, who were Captain and Senior First Officer for Ryanair respectively, were confirmed dead.
The incident involved the taxi and two lorries on the westbound carriageway between junction 8 and junction 7. The two pilots died at the scene. Their next of kin are being supported by specialist police officers, Cheshire Police said.
Liverpool Echo reports the driver of the car was taken to hospital with serious injuries. He remains in hospital.
Police have arrested a 61-year-old driver of one of the two lorries on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving.
