Two Ryanair pilots named as victims of M62 crash involving two lorries

Two Ryanair pilots have been named as victims of a crash involving a car and two lorries on the M62.

Captain Matt Greenhalgh, 28 and Senior First Officer Jamie Fernandes, 24 were travelling to Liverpool airport by taxi when the collision occurred at around 5.30am on Thursday morning.

Both men died at the scene of the incident between Junctions 7 and 8 on the westbound carriage of the transpennine motorway. 

The car driver was rushed to hospital where he remains with serious injuries.

A driver of one of the lorries, aged 61, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death and serious injury by dangerous driving.

The victims’ next of kin are receiving support from specialist officers.
