UK megastore ‘in actual mess’ because it’s set to break down with 3,000 jobs in danger

Carpetright is facing collapse this morning, putting 3,000 jobs at risk.

The megastore is now expected to file a notice to appoint administrators, according to The Sun. It comes after it was reported yesterday Carpetright had been put up for sale with sources warning shops could close as part of the sales process.

But now sources have told the newspaper that advisers at PwC realised there was no way of achieving a solvent sale of the retailer, which has around 300 stores across the UK. One insider called the business, which has suffered slowing sales, “a real mess”.

Typically a retailer has ten days before it officially goes bust after filing a notice of intent to appoint an administrator, although it can be cut shorter if needed. Carpetright will continue to trade while a rescue buyer is sought.

Struggling sales have been linked to the cost-of-living crisis with shoppers more focused on paying bills than making homeware purchases. Founded by the late Lord Harris of Peckham in 1988, the retailer brought in experts last year to look at cost-cutting measures.

The chain currently has 274 stores across the UK according to its website, and is one of the country’s biggest floor-covering retailers.

Carpetright has been contacted for comment.
