Second baby dies after east London home hearth

A second child has died after a blaze broke out at a house in East London yesterday, while four others remain in hospital.
Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters were called to the blaze on Napier Road in East Ham at just before 8.30am on Saturday, the London Fire Brigade (LFB) said.
Half of the first floor and half of the ground floor of a terraced house were damaged by the fire, which was under control by 9.10am.
The London Ambulance Service sent ambulance crews, advanced paramedics, members of its Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) and an air ambulance to the scene.
Today London Fire Brigade’s Assistant Commissioner Patrick Goulbourne said: ‘Sadly, one child was pronounced dead at the scene yesterday morning, and overnight a second child died in hospital.

Mr Goulbourne added: ‘Two other children and two adults were also taken to hospital, where the children and one adult remain in a serious condition.’
‘This is a terribly sad incident and the thoughts of all of us at London Fire Brigade are with the family, friends and all those affected at this difficult time.
‘Staff will be in the local community over the coming days to offer support and advice where needed.
The London Fire Brigade’s Assistant Commissioner also confirmed that firefighters would receive ‘support from our counselling and trauma service’.
One user on X wrote: ‘Thoughts with the crews and control who dealt with this tragedy.’
The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the fire service and the Metropolitan Police.
Scotland Yard said officers from Newham were also at the scene.

In a post on X, a spokesperson for Scotland Yard wrote: ‘We are currently working with @LFBNewham and @Ldn_Ambulance at Napier Road, E6.
‘The incident is currently ongoing and updates will be posted when they are available. Napier Road is closed to access at the moment.’
