Rubbish-strewn property the place residents ‘reside in concern’ as snitches get stitches

Thugs have left residents of an estate ‘living in fear’. Anti-social behaviour including fly-tipping and knives is rampant in Fallowfield, Manchester, according to an MP.

Afzal Khan, the Labour MP for Manchester Gorton, has penned an open letter to the police and local housing association about the dire situation reportedly engulfing the Bethnall Drive estate in the south Manchester area.

In the letter, co-authored with local councillors, Mr Khan details harrowing incidents where children have been ‘beaten up’ and ‘threatened with knives in the street’.

He also highlights the nightmare of congested parking, with ‘regular’ problems faced by parents during the school run at nearby St Kentigern’s Primary School, reports the Manchester Evening News.

The MP pointed out that fly-tipping is a major concern on the estate, situated off Yew Tree Road, alongside a ‘build up of waste’ in the front gardens of homes. Taking to social media to share the letter, Mr Khan wrote: “Anti-social behaviour has been a long standing problem on the estate, with some residents telling us they live in fear.”

He continued: “There have been examples of retaliation for reporting. For example, cars have been smashed up, and children have been beaten up and threatened with knives in the street.”

Mr Khan went on to say: “Fly tipping of domestic waste is a commonly reported problem as well as a build up of domestic waste in front gardens.”

Concluding his message, Mr Khan stated he is ‘very pleased’ that neighbourhood officers have started ‘engaging with residents’, but stressed that more action is ‘still needed’ to tackle the ongoing issues.

Both Greater Manchester Police and One Manchester have been approached for a statement.
