Ed Miliband claims he’s a ‘super-nerd’ on local weather points
Ed Miliband yesterday described himself as a ‘super-nerd’ on climate issues as he branded the state ownership of public assets a ‘patriotic mission’.
The Energy Secretary vowed to use taxpayers’ cash to ‘accelerate’ Labour’s net zero push as he urged MPs to support state intervention in the energy market.
He confirmed that state-owned GB Energy would own and operate assets, despite Sir Keir Starmer insisting during the election campaign that it would be ‘an investment vehicle, not an energy company’.
Mr Miliband said the new firm, backed by £8.3billion of public funds, would play a key role in the Government’s ‘mission’ to decarbonise the electricity system by 2030 — five years earlier than pledged by the last government.
Sir Keir has been accused of ushering in a new era of big government following a King’s Speech which pledged to renationalise the railways, operate green energy sites and centralise control of the planning system.

Downing Street has denied the Prime Minister is taking an ‘ideological approach’ to tackling Britain’s problems.
But Mr Miliband yesterday declared that the Government is committed to increasing state ownership of key assets as a matter of principle.
The former Labour leader, told MPs: ‘Anyone who knows me, knows me as a super nerd. And that means that when it comes to all of my responsibilities, particularly my quasi-judicial responsibilities, I take them incredibly seriously.’
He added: ‘The Government believe in the ownership of British assets by the British people, for the benefit of the British people. Following the people’s verdict at the election, I hope that this is a patriotic mission that the whole House can get behind.’
