Microsoft outage exhibits ‘the world wasn’t ready’ – this is how we alter that
Experts have weighed in on the Microsoft outage incident, claiming the industry wasn’t prepared for the blackout.
Microsoft has experienced a global outage, impacting various sectors including airlines which had to ground their planes – with banks, hospitals and companies across the world also affected.
Users have reported seeing the infamous Blue Screen of Death error message, stemming from an issue with cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike.

There’s lots of quality news coming out of the US.
“Our services are still seeing continuous improvements while we continue to take mitigation actions,” said Microsoft on Twitter/X this morning. “We still expect that users will continue to see gradual relief as we continue to mitigate the issue.”
Speaking exclusively to the Daily Star, data privacy expert Rik Viergever claimed to have a solution to the global outage. “The Microsoft outage highlights that lack of competition in the tech industry can have a profound effect on daily life,” said Viergever, who is COO at tech company Murena.
Viergever highlighted the importance of having an “open-source” software, as opposed to the “closed market and proprietary software” that’s the case at the moment.
“Other advantages of open-source software and systems are that companies can work together on the same software and collaborate to keep it secure,” he said. “Anyone can make a fork to increase security, and all code is published openly and thus can be reviewed and audited by anyone for security issues and vulnerabilities.
“This can lead to much quicker and higher-quality bug identification and fixing.”
The tech whizz also claimed if the outage happens again for any longer, we could be looking at some serious consequences.
“One bug has caused widespread chaos. It hasn’t even been 24-hours yet and the stock market has already been affected, if this were to continue for days or weeks then it would have enormous consequences for our economies,” he said.
However, in the short term its not all bad news. Those using Microsoft’s services for the daily grind are taking to X to celebrate the fact that their Friday schedule has been scuppered by tech issues.
One man said the outage makes life ‘worth living’ again. He wrote on X: “Just one microsoft worldwide outages that prevents us from using our work laptops makes this life worth living again.”
