Sky Sports News hit by broadcast failure – is The Open and F1 protection affected
Sky Sports News had to cut live coverage when the broadcaster was hit by a “global technical issue”.
The TV giant confirmed they had been struck by the Microsoft outage causing chaos across the globe on Friday (July 19). In a statement, the company said: “Due to a global technical issue, Sky Sports News is currently unable to broadcast live.
“For all the latest sports news, scores and action, go to the Sky Sports app or website.” Sky Sports News didn’t go off air, but the channel was forced to show nothing but pre-recorded content for nearly two hours, before the channel came back on air shortly before 10am.

Viewers were left fearing they wouldn’t be able to watch their favourite sports ahead of a massive weekend of live action. But they breathed a sigh of relief because fortunately not all of Sky Sports’ channels were affected.
Sky confirmed golf fans could still watch all the action from The Open on their Sky Sports Golf channel. Meanwhile, cricket lovers will not be disappointed as England’s second Test against the West Indies continues on Sky’s cricket channel.

And the practice ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday will also be available on the company’s F1 channel. Sky News’ channel also went down. The TV company showed a shot of their logo with the caption: “We apologise for the interruption to this broadcast. We hope to restore the transmission of this broadcast shortly.”
The major tech issue has seen widespread IT outages affecting airlines, broadcasters and banks. Microsoft 365 say they are investigating an issue impacting users’ ability to access apps and services.
“Our services are still seeing continuous improvements while we continue to take mitigation actions,” they said on X this morning. “We still expect that users will continue to see gradual relief as we continue to mitigate the issue.”
