‘Target on Keir Starmer’ as ‘nutters might be impressed’ by Donald Trump taking pictures

An expert has warned that “nutters” could be “inspired” by Donald Trump’s shooter, with fear surrounding a summit for European leaders.

With 47 European leaders currently taking part in a summit at Blenheim Palace in Woodstock, UK, thoughts have turned to security concerns following the assassination attempt on Donald Trump on Saturday (July 13).

After the ex-president was shot at while giving a speech at a Pennsylvania rally, it highlighted a distinct fear among commentators about the safety of other political leaders. Speaking exclusively to the Daily Star, Professor Anthony Glees warned that since 20-year-old Thomas Mattew Crooks took aim at Trump, it might open the door for “copy-cats”.

Trump’s near-death experience has caused other leaders to take note

“People will want to be like Lee Harvey Oswald or John Wilkes Booth, this will be a serious headache for security now,” he said.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron are among the world leaders who are attending the summit of Blenheim this week, and Glees claimed “tighter protection” now needs to be offered to them.

He said: “Sir Keir [Starmer’s] close protection officers were not much in evidence on a recent public appearance, and I hope he understands that he too is a target.

“Yes, there are the presence of police and helicopters here at Blenheim. It has already been tight but it clearly has to be tightened up another notch. They’ve made a no-fly zone too, as a place it is quite hard to secure, but secure it you must.

“There must be armed cops, we need far more of them, guarding our most important politicians. Because violence breeds violence and there is always a copy-cat element to this [Trump’s shooting].

“Has enough been done? I’m not sure. There were already worries about Extinction Rebellion and Just Stop Oil. But now they have to worry about nutters who will be inspired by the Trump incident and will want to immortalise their names. Because that’s what happens.”

After the incident in Pennsylvania Trump announced he was “lucky to be here”, but it hasn’t been the case for countless political leaders over the years who have fallen foul of attackers either wielding guns or knives.

Emmanuel Macron is one of several high-profile European leaders to take part in the Blenheim Summit

“Although we’ve been safeguarded in this country (UK) from extremism by our electoral system, we’ve had the assassination of Joe Cox, Sir David Amiss and the attempted assassination of Sir Stephen Timms [in 2010],” Glees said.

He added: “There is still political violence in this country and [incidents like Trump’s attack] are things that people like me will have to reflect more and more on.

“The wider security of Europe has been called into question.”
