Four youngsters locked up for killing schoolboy,16, in a revenge assault

Four teenagers have been sentenced for killing a boy, 16, in a fatal revenge attack where a single stab ‘pierced his heart’.

Kennie Carter died after being stabbed once with a ‘long knife’ in the chest on Thirlmere Avenue, Stretford, Greater Manchester on January 22, 2022.

Manchester Crown Court heard the group of youths acted in revenge for an incident that happened the day before the murder, where ‘metal poles’ were brandished.

On Friday, a 16-year-old boy, who was 14 when Kennie was killed, was sentenced to to detention in a youth offenders’ institution with a minimum term of 16 years.

The teenager, who cannot be identified due to his age, confessed he was the one who delivered the fatal blow, but claimed it was in self-defence.

18-year-old Latif Ferguson of Old Trafford, who was 15 at the time of the killing, was handed a five year sentence at a young offenders’ institution.

The two other 16-year-old youths were also sentenced to four years behind bars after they were all found guilty of manslaughter for ‘encouraging’ the brutal attack.

The six other teenagers, who are currently aged between 15 and 19, were found not guilty of manslaughter and murder by the jury. 

Evidence presented by the prosecution showed the murder was carried out in a bid for revenge in retaliation to an incident that happened the day prior.

On the day of Kennie’s death, the four convicted youngsters stole bikes from a block of flats and were heard howling: ‘This is revenge’.

After the schoolboy was killed, one of the youths was seen on CCTV ‘showing off and demonstrating his stabbing action’ to his peers.

Addressing the defendants, Mr Justice Goose said: ‘The stabbing occurred because of a perceived grievance between Kennie Carter and his associates and with the four of you.

‘You were intent on causing Kennie Carter harm.

The judge said to the teenager convicted of murder: ‘Part of what may have caused you to commit this offence may be your need to appear strong and loyal to your associates who had been disrespected.

‘I am sure that the knife used to stab Kennie Carter was your knife which you took with you to use in revenge.’
