Adam Peaty fingers HUGE increase to Team GB after optimistic Covid take a look at

  • Team GB’s star swimmer is back in training after a positive Covid test
  • The two-time Olympic gold medallist is looking to add to his medal tally
  • The 29-year-old was set to swim in the men’s and mixed 400m relay events

Adam Peaty has handed Team GB‘s swim team a huge boost ahead of their Olympic relay races this weekend, after being pictured back in the pool just days after a positive Covid test.

Peaty tested positive for coronavirus just a day after winning Olympic silver in the men’s 100m breaststroke, throwing participation in the rest of the Games in doubt.

He was slated to take part in both the men’s and mixed 4x100m medley relay races – the mixed being the event he won gold for Britain in, at the 2020 Tokyo Games.

Given he’s been snapped back in the pool, it’s fair to assume Peaty has passed the virus’ infectious period that requires athletes to isolate.

The team’s title defence will begin on Friday morning with the heats, and a potential final on Saturday evening, should Britain qualify.

The men’s medley relay, meanwhile, begins on Saturday morning, with the heats on Sunday night.

Team GB officials have previously talked-up the chances of a return, saying they were ‘hopeful [he will] be back in competition’ – possibly as early as Friday.

They released a statement, saying: ‘As in any case of illness, the situation is being managed appropriately, with all usual precautions being taken to keep the wider delegation healthy.’

Peaty, meanwhile, released his own message to fans, saying: ‘I’ll now be focusing on a fast. Full recovery to give my best in the team relays later in the week.

‘I’ve had so many messages and I’ll get back to you all, thank you for your support as it has truly been an unforgettable journey.’

Britain’s two-time Olympic gold medallist missed out on his third consecutive gold by just 0.02 seconds on Sunday, and a positive test puts further participation at risk for the rest of the Games.
