Algerian fighter Imane Khelif has secured her spot in the quarter-finals of the women’s welterweight division at the 2024 Paris Olympics following a bizarre first round victory against Italian Angela Carini.
The fight between Khelif and her Italian opponent was abandoned after 46 seconds by Carinia after she received two hard blows from Khelif with one of the punches appearing to knock her chin strap off.
The welterweight fight was already doused in controversy and scandal heading into it, as many people in the boxing world questioned the Algerian’s eligibility to compete in the women’s event.
As she had already been disqualified from the Women’s World Boxing Championships last year after testing for high levels of testosterone which failed to meet the eligibility criteria for the event.

The welterweight fighter’s next bout will be on Saturday in one of the divisions quarter-final clashes.
Her fight is scheduled for Saturday, August 3 at 4:22pm UK time.
Her opponent has yet to be announced. However if she beats them, she will be guaranteed at minimum a bronze medal in Paris.
According to feminist website Reduxx, Khelif is thought to be impacted by a Difference of Sexual Development (DSD), which is a series of medical conditions identified at birth where genitalia is atypical in relation to chromosomes.

Following Khelif’s win against the Italian, a lip-reader has revealed what Carini said after withdrawing from the fight.
According to Gazzetta dello Sport, a lip-reader has claimed that Carini told her corner ‘it hurt like hell’ when getting hit by Khelif.
She then afterwards did an interview where she stated ‘I took the second blow to the nose and it hurt so bad, I didn’t feel like continuing. Did I let myself be influenced by the media case? No, I was here to win my Olympics. Giving up was a gesture of maturity, not of surrender’.
