Football followers joke they noticed Wayne Rooney in chaotic Plymouth protest protection

Footie fans have joked Wayne Rooney was filmed during a live Sky News broadcast of the Plymouth riots.

In footage recorded last night, reporter Dan Whitehead is speaks to the camera with rival protest groups facing off against each other behind him. Viewers suddenly became distracted by one particular man who looked awfully familiar.

A bearded bloke is seen walking past in the background wearing a blue baseball cap and blue jacket who looks like the England legend’s doppelganger.

Many folk rushed to X, formerly Twitter, to point out the man’s striking resemblance to the manager of Championship side Plymouth Argyle, who is suspected to have moved to the city after becoming the team’s boss in May.

One wrote: ”I’ve watched this 13 times thinking “there will be an angle that’ll show it’s actually not Wayne Rooney”, but that has got to be.”

Another said: ”Gotta be him especially as he lives there.”

But others claimed that the man is a Sky News protection officer who was providing security for the broadcast crew.

The apparent sighting of Rooney, 38, comes after he last month told a Plymouth fan that he has moved into home in the city, Plymouth Live reports.

Chaos erupted in Plymouth city centre when far-right demonstrators clashed with Stand Up To Racism campaigners.

Multiple injuries were reported after missiles, including bricks, a crutch, a can of cider and a flare, were hurled during the clash.

Devon and Cornwall Police said 150 officers were been deployed in Plymouth city centre.

The riot follows ongoing violence across the country triggered by mass stabbings of kids in Southport earlier this month.

Assistant Chief Constable Glen Mayhew from Devon and Cornwall Police has warned that the force is ramping up its presence in the city centre after receiving tip-offs.

He said: “As a result of the information we have received, we will be increasing our presence in the city centre. I have a dedicated team planning the policing for this, and other events as they occur during the week.”

Daily Star has contacted Wayne Rooney’s representatives.
